Yejin Kwon

Yejin Kwon, a Korean composer now based in Montreal, boasts a remarkable repertoire spanning diverse musical genres, including orchestral, Korean traditional, and electronic compositions. Her musical journey commenced at the tender age of four when she first touched the piano keys, profoundly influenced by her early encounters with hymns and her mastery of the Kayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument.

Kwon’s musical interests traverse a wide spectrum, encompassing classical, jazz, world music, and the rich tapestry of Korean traditions. Her academic pursuits have taken her from classical studies at the University of Dankook in Seoul, South Korea, under the tutelage of Hyunsoo Jung, to contemporary music training at the C.R.R. de Paris (Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris) under Édith Canat de Chizy. Presently, she is pursuing her master’s degree at the University of Montreal, focusing on composition and sound creation with François Xavier-Dupas. These global academic experiences have expanded her artistic horizons, enabling the development of a distinctive musical style that bridges Eastern and Western traditions.

Kwon’s talents transcend classical boundaries. Her inquisitive spirit drives her to seamlessly incorporate elements of jazz, pop, and Korean traditional music into her compositions. Proficient in writing for both acoustic and electronic instruments, she continually pushes the boundaries of musical innovation.

In 2022, Kwon was recognized as one of the esteemed recipients of the Artist Sponsor Award by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture for her orchestral works. This milestone coincided with the release of her inaugural orchestral album, “BIBLOTECA,” in September 2022.

Currently residing in Montreal, Kwon’s creative journey, which commenced in 2022, weaves together her memories of Korean traditional music, classical compositions, and electronic elements. In the words of Kwon herself, she is on a trajectory towards monumental artistic heights, transcending multiple layers of creative expression.
