Meredith Johnson: Winnipeg New Music Festival

Double bassist Meredith Johnson enjoys a varied career of performance and teaching.  He has been Principal Bassist of the WSO since 2004 and has also performed across the United States, Canada, and Europe with numerous professional and festival orchestras.  He is a long-standing member of the Eastern Music Festival bass faculty as well as the orchestra Personnel Manager.  Since its inception in 2012, he has been a member of the prestigious All-Star Orchestra, an ensemble which has garnered extensive educational and artistic accolades, including nine Emmy Awards.

An enthusiastic chamber musician and teacher, Meredith performs regularly with Manitoba’s premier ensembles, including Agassiz Chamber Music, Camerata Nova, GroundSwell, The Virtuosi Concert Series and The Winnipeg Chamber Music Society.  In addition to an active private studio and double bass instruction at the University of Manitoba, he maintains a professional association with Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador and has given clinics and masterclasses at universities in Canada and the United States.

Meredith has a wide variety of musical interests and has been involved in diverse recording and performance projects.  He has recorded with the Nashville based old-time band, The Bashful Mountain Broadcasters as well as Winnipeg based Heavy Bell, on their debut album, By Grand Central Station.  He is also the bassist for the Winnipeg based crossover quartet The neWSOunds. Since 2017 Meredith has been active in the commission and performance of new music.  He was part of a group of bassists from across North America that commissioned Sueños, a suite for bass and piano by composer Andrés Martín, and most recently in 2020 he assembled an international consortium of cellists, bassists, and patrons to commission an exciting new cello and bass duo: Parlour Games by Canadian Michael Oesterle.

Meredith lives in Winnipeg with his wife, violinist Susan McCallum and their three children.
